Ford Focus 2012-2018 common problems before buying
The Mk3 Ford Focus is everywhere, which makes it easy to assume there will always be another good one. That is true, but it also means there are many neglected examples. The trick is not finding a Focus. It is avoiding the one that will need money immediately.
Why buyers get caught
The Focus feels low-stakes because there are so many of them. That is exactly why buyers accept weak examples. Transmission shudder, coolant issues, oil use, AC faults, brake wear, and electrical warnings should be priced in or avoided.
Common problems to check
Automatic or CVT shudder
Low-speed judder, delayed engagement, or hesitation should change the deal. It is easy to miss if the test drive avoids traffic, hills, and slow manoeuvres.
Oil consumption and leaks
A clean engine bay can still hide usage patterns. Check service records, oil level, warning history, and signs of repeated topping up.
Coolant leaks and overheating
Coolant smell, crusting, low level, or temperature behavior can point to bigger problems. Do not buy a car that is already explaining away cooling-system issues.
AC and electrical faults
AC compressor or condenser problems, infotainment faults, reverse-camera issues, and sensor warnings are common enough to test properly.
Suspension, brakes, and tyres
Knocks, brake pulsation, seized calipers, uneven tyre wear, and accident-repair signs are all useful negotiation or walk-away signals.
Ask before you travel
- Which gearbox is fitted, and has it had any clutch, software, or transmission work?
- Does the car use oil or coolant between services?
- Has the AC, camera, infotainment, or any warning light been repaired?
- Are tyres wearing evenly, and when were brakes last serviced?
Discount hard or walk away if
- Judder, delayed engagement, or hesitation during slow manoeuvres.
- Coolant smell, low coolant, or overheating history.
- Multiple small electrical faults on a car priced as clean.
- Service history does not match mileage or seller claims.
