Legacybuyer's guide

10 known faults — inspection procedures and real repair costs.

The BN Legacy is a midsize sedan that gets overlooked in a market full of crossovers, which keeps prices reasonable but also means the used examples arriving on the market now have had more varied ownership histories than dealers often admit. CVT shudder on light-throttle pull-away, oil consumption that sits just under the level where a warning light triggers, and AC compressor failure before 100,000 miles are the three faults that account for the majority of NHTSA complaint filings for this generation. Add coolant leaks at the water pump and the picture of what separates a good BN from a costly one becomes clear.

This guide covers ten documented issues: automatic/CVT shudder or delayed engagement, engine oil consumption or leak, coolant leak or overheating, AC compressor or condenser failure, infotainment/camera electrical faults, suspension knocks and tyre wear, brake pulsation or seized caliper, water leak or accident repair, ADAS/radar calibration fault, and recall/campaign status. Each fault has a field check and a real repair-cost range.

The 2018–2019 cars are the preferred buying window, but condition and documented maintenance matter more than year alone. A cold start, an OBD scan across all modules, a check of oil and coolant levels before and after the drive, and invoices that account for gearbox fluid service are the non-negotiables. This guide sets out exactly what to look for at each step.
