BYBA Buy Score

5.0/10

Cautious buy

3 walk-away risks, 6 serious faults, 1 minor fault documented for this generation, weighted by severity and repair cost. Biggest factor: n20/n26 timing-chain and oil-pump-chain guide wear. Score methodology.

The F30 3 Series is one of BMW's best used-car platforms when the engine choice is right and the service file is more convincing than the seller. The expensive traps are early N20/N26 timing-chain and oil-pump-chain wear, N47 diesel chain noise, diesel EGR cooler recall/fire risk, neglected ZF 8HP servicing, xDrive transfer-case stress from tyre mismatch, and ageing 330e hybrid hardware. The safest money is a 2016-2019 LCI B48/B58 petrol or well-documented B47/N57 diesel with clean recall status, matching tyres and a BMW-capable scan. Owners should prioritise chain noise, coolant loss, EGR recall status and xDrive tyre discipline before cosmetic upgrades.

Best years

2016-2019

Best buys

  • 2016-2019 LCI 320i/330i B48 or 340i B58 with short oil intervals and clean coolant system.
  • B47/N57 diesel with EGR recall complete, DPF data clean and motorway history.
  • ZF 8HP automatic with documented fluid/pan service despite BMW's lifetime-fill language.

Inspect hard

  • 2012-2015 N20/N26 petrol cars for cold chain whine and SIB 11 03 17 warranty/repair history.
  • N47 diesels for rear-of-engine chain rattle and EGR cooler campaign completion.
  • xDrive cars for four matching tyres and transfer-case behaviour in tight turns.

Avoid

  • Any N20/N26 with cold rattle, timing/VANOS codes or missing oil history.
  • Diesel with active EGR/DPF/AdBlue faults or unresolved EGR cooler recall.
  • 330e that will not charge, has HV faults, or has unknown battery warranty status.

Engines and trims

Which BMW 3 Series should you buy?

On most used cars, the engine and trim choice changes the risk more than the mileage does. Narrow this down before you start viewing cars.

N20 / N26 2.0 turbo petrol

2012-2015 core risk period; overlap into 2016 by market

AVOID UNLESS PROVEN

This engine gives the early F30 good performance and low fuel use, but the timing-chain guide story dominates the buying decision. Buy only when the engine is quiet from cold, oil history is short-interval, and chain/oil-pump-chain work is documented or the build date is outside the high-risk window.

B48 2.0 turbo petrol

2016-2019 LCI

BEST PETROL BUY

The B48 is the reason late F30s are desirable. It removes the N20 chain anxiety and gives strong economy, but coolant hoses, oil-filter-housing seepage and 330e-specific hybrid hardware still deserve inspection.

N55 335i

2012-2015

GOOD ENTHUSIAST BUY

The N55 is generally preferable to an early N20 for enthusiasts, but it is older, hotter and more expensive around oil leaks, charge pipes, ignition and cooling. Buy condition and maintenance, not the badge on the boot.

B58 340i

2016-2019

BEST IF BUDGET ALLOWS

The B58 340i is the best F30 powertrain for buyers who want performance without M-car costs. It still needs cooling-system and ZF service checks, but it avoids the headline N20/N47 chain risks.

N47 diesel

2012-2015/2016 depending market

INSPECT CAREFULLY

The N47 can do huge mileage, but rear-mounted chain wear and EGR cooler recalls define its risk. A noisy N47 is expensive because access is poor; a quiet one with recall paperwork and short oil intervals is usable.

B47 diesel

2015/2016-2019

GOOD IF RECALL CLEAN

The B47 is the better four-cylinder diesel choice. It still lives in the same emissions-recall world, so EGR status and DPF usage data matter more than brochure economy.

330e plug-in hybrid

2016-2019

BUY ONLY AFTER HV SCAN

The 330e is attractive when it charges properly and still has useful EV range. It is a poor blind purchase because charging electronics, HV battery ageing and cooling faults need BMW-capable scan data.

Year notes

Year-by-year buyer advice

Use this to narrow the search before you spend time travelling to view a car.

2012

F30 launch year with N20/N26 petrol and N47 diesel; early cars now carry the highest age and chain-risk combination.

Buyer: Only buy a 2012 if the price reflects inspection risk and the engine is quiet cold.

Owner: Keep oil intervals short and document any chain work; resale depends on proof.

2013

Model range expands; early petrol brake vacuum pump recall and N20 chain-risk years continue.

Buyer: Check vacuum-pump recall, cold chain noise and oil history before trim/spec.

Owner: Do not ignore hard brake pedal or chain whine; both have official trail.

2014

More diesel and xDrive supply; fuel pump and lighting recall populations appear in some markets.

Buyer: Strong spec year but still early-engine risk. VIN recall lookup and BMW scan are mandatory.

Owner: Four matching tyres are essential on xDrive; tyre shortcuts become transfer-case bills.

2015

Transition year toward revised chain parts and LCI; some markets still sell N20/N47 combinations.

Buyer: Build date matters. A late car with proof is much better than an early car with vague claims.

Owner: If you own a high-risk engine, assemble chain and recall paperwork before selling.

2016

LCI/B48/B58 era arrives in many markets; 330e appears.

Buyer: This is the main line in the sand. Prefer B48/B58 unless the early car is exceptionally documented.

Owner: LCI owners should still watch coolant and ZF service; newer engine does not mean no maintenance.

2017

B-series petrols become normal; diesel EGR recall exposure remains important.

Buyer: Good year for B48/B58. For diesel, check EGR cooler campaign and DPF data.

Owner: Keep EGR recall completion in the service file.

2018

Mature F30 production, strong late B48/B58 supply, 330e ageing begins to matter.

Buyer: One of the best years if scan is clean and tyres match.

Owner: Service ZF and cooling system before they create sale-time objections.

2019

End of F30/F31/F34 run while G20 arrives in some markets.

Buyer: Late F30s are desirable; verify it is actually F30/F31/F34 and not G20 if the listing is vague.

Owner: A clean late F30 is easy to sell if recall, scan and tyre history are tidy.

Common problems

Faults to check before buying

What fails, what it looks like, what it costs, and the quick checks you can do at the viewing - ranked by how badly each one can hurt you.

Fault 1

N20/N26 timing-chain and oil-pump-chain guide wear

WALK AWAY / $$$

Affects

Mainly 2012-2015 320i/328i with N20/N26; some market overlap into 2016.

Symptoms

Cold rattle/whine, rough idle, timing/VANOS codes, metal/plastic debris, vague chain invoices.

Typical repair cost

EUR 1,400-4,800; EUR 5,000-10,000+ if timing jumps.

Codes / scan clues

P0011, P0012, P0015, P052B, BMW 130304, 130308.

Root cause: Timing-chain guides and oil-pump-chain components wear or break.

Quick check

  • True cold start with bonnet open.
  • BMW-capable scan for DME timing/VANOS history.
  • Verify full chain kit and oil-pump-chain invoice.
  • Reject long oil intervals plus noise.

Buyer note

This fault decides whether an early petrol F30 is a bargain or a trap.

Owner note

If it rattles, stop treating it as normal startup noise.

Fault 2

N47 diesel timing-chain wear

SERIOUS / $$$

Affects

Early F30/F31 316d/318d/320d N47 diesels before B47 transition.

Symptoms

Rear-engine metallic rattle, hard starting, cam/crank plausibility faults.

Typical repair cost

EUR 1,800-4,500; EUR 5,000+ if engine damage.

Codes / scan clues

BMW diesel cam/crank and timing plausibility codes.

Root cause: Rear-mounted chain system wears; access makes repair labour high.

Quick check

  • Listen near gearbox side on cold start.
  • Ask for full chain-kit invoice.
  • Prefer B47 if history is weak.

Buyer note

A rattling N47 is not a diesel soundtrack.

Owner note

Short oil intervals and early diagnosis are cheaper than rear-chain failure.

Fault 3

Diesel EGR cooler recall / intake fire risk

WALK AWAY / $$

Affects

F30/F31 diesels including N47T/B47/N57 recall populations; N47T campaign includes 2012-2018 production.

Symptoms

Coolant loss, exhaust smell, limp mode, EGR/boost/DPF codes, active recall.

Typical repair cost

EUR 0 recall; EUR 600-1,500 EGR cooler; EUR 1,500-3,500 intake/DPF damage.

Codes / scan clues

EGR flow, boost plausibility, DPF and NOx manufacturer codes.

Root cause: EGR cooler leak mixes coolant with soot/oil deposits and can damage intake components.

Quick check

  • VIN-check BMW EGR campaign.
  • Check coolant level and EGR/intake smell.
  • Scan DDE for EGR/DPF history.
  • Demand recall completion proof.

Buyer note

A diesel with unknown EGR status is not ready to buy.

Owner note

Do the recall and keep the invoice; it is a fire-risk item.

Fault 4

ZF 8HP shudder, harsh shifts or neglected fluid

SERIOUS / $$$

Affects

Most automatic F30/F31/F34, especially high-torque diesel, 335i/340i, tuned and xDrive cars.

Symptoms

Lock-up shudder, harsh downshift, delayed R/D engagement, drivetrain warning.

Typical repair cost

EUR 500-900 fluid/pan; EUR 1,200-2,500 valve body/torque converter; EUR 3,000-6,000 gearbox.

Codes / scan clues

EGS clutch fill-time, pressure and adaptation faults.

Root cause: Fluid wear, adaptations, mechatronic or torque-converter wear.

Quick check

  • Cold R/D selection.
  • Light-throttle lock-up at 60-90 km/h.
  • Kickdown and coastdown shift quality.
  • Ask for ZF Lifeguard fluid/pan invoice.

Buyer note

A smooth ZF is a selling point; a shuddering one is a major bill.

Owner note

Service the 8HP before high-mileage shudder appears.

Fault 5

Brake vacuum pump recall / reduced brake assist

WALK AWAY / $$

Affects

2012-2014 320i/328i/xDrive N20 cars under NHTSA 13V454 and 14V627.

Symptoms

Hard brake pedal, increased stopping distance, brake warning, active recall.

Typical repair cost

EUR 0 recall; EUR 700-1,700 outside campaign.

Codes / scan clues

Brake vacuum/assist faults may be stored.

Root cause: Insufficient lubrication can cause vacuum pump failure.

Quick check

  • VIN check 13V454/14V627.
  • Pump brake engine-off, then start and feel assist build.
  • Road test repeated stops.

Buyer note

Brake assist uncertainty is not a small discount item.

Owner note

Complete the recall and keep documentation.

Fault 6

Electric coolant pump connector / water-pump short recall

SERIOUS / $$

Affects

2012-2016 328i/328xi and related N20 applications under NHTSA 24V608.

Symptoms

Overheating, fan running hard, coolant pump warning, burning smell, no-start.

Typical repair cost

EUR 0 recall; EUR 600-1,400 pump/thermostat; EUR 2,000+ overheat damage.

Codes / scan clues

Electric water pump communication/speed and coolant-temperature faults.

Root cause: Improperly sealed pump connector can short if exposed to water.

Quick check

  • VIN check 24V608.
  • Monitor coolant temperature during road test.
  • Listen for abnormal fan run-on.

Buyer note

A recent recall can change an old N20's risk profile; verify it.

Owner note

Recall completion is cheaper than pump/fire/overheat consequences.

Fault 7

B48/B58 coolant, oil-filter-housing and plastic hose leaks

LOW / $$

Affects

2016-2019 B48 330i/330e and B58 340i.

Symptoms

Low coolant, oil/coolant residue, brittle vent hoses, sweet smell.

Typical repair cost

EUR 250-700 hoses; EUR 700-1,500 oil-filter-housing/coolant leak; EUR 2,000+ overheat.

Codes / scan clues

Coolant-temperature and low-coolant history; usually visual.

Root cause: Plastic coolant pipes, seals and heat cycling on B-series engines.

Quick check

  • Inspect oil filter housing and coolant hoses.
  • Check coolant level cold.
  • Road test to full temperature.

Buyer note

A B48/B58 is safer than N20, not maintenance-free.

Owner note

Replace brittle hoses proactively before road-trip failures.

Fault 8

xDrive transfer case stress from mismatched tyres

SERIOUS / $$$

Affects

All xDrive F30/F31/F34, worse on high-torque diesel and performance cars.

Symptoms

Binding on tight turns, vibration, drivetrain warning, uneven tyre wear.

Typical repair cost

EUR 200-500 fluid/tyres; EUR 1,200-2,500 used/rebuilt transfer case; EUR 3,000+ new.

Codes / scan clues

VTG clutch, calibration and oil-wear codes.

Root cause: Rolling circumference mismatch and old transfer-case fluid stress clutches.

Quick check

  • Check four matching tyres and tread depth.
  • Do tight slow turns.
  • Scan VTG module.

Buyer note

Mixed tyres on xDrive are evidence of poor ownership.

Owner note

Buy four tyres as a set; saving on tyres risks the transfer case.

Fault 9

330e battery, charging and hybrid module faults

SERIOUS / $$$

Affects

2016-2019 F30 330e PHEV.

Symptoms

Low EV range, charging fails, drivetrain warning, petrol engine always running.

Typical repair cost

EUR 150-350 diagnosis; EUR 700-2,000 charging/cooling; EUR 3,000-8,000 HV battery repair.

Codes / scan clues

BMW EME/SME/HV battery isolation or charging codes.

Root cause: Ageing HV battery, charging electronics, cooling faults or software/campaign issues.

Quick check

  • Arrive with car charged and test EV mode.
  • Scan hybrid modules.
  • Check charge-port and cable.
  • Verify HV battery warranty.

Buyer note

A 330e that cannot demonstrate charging is not priced like a normal 330i.

Owner note

Use and charge the hybrid system regularly; neglect does not preserve it.

Fault 10

2014 fuel pump recall on petrol F30

SERIOUS / $$

Affects

Certain 2014 320i/328i/335i/ActiveHybrid 3 in NHTSA 15V189.

Symptoms

No-start, stall, hesitation, fuel-pressure faults, active recall.

Typical repair cost

EUR 0 recall; EUR 450-1,100 pump replacement.

Codes / scan clues

Low-pressure fuel pump, lean and misfire faults.

Root cause: Improper nickel plating of pump components can cause pump failure.

Quick check

  • VIN-check 2014 petrol cars.
  • Hot restart after road test.
  • Scan fuel-pressure history.

Buyer note

Fuel-pump recall proof removes one 2014-specific worry.

Owner note

Keep recall proof; stalls are safety defects, not quirks.
