X3buyer's guide
10 known faults — inspection procedures and real repair costs.
The F25 X3 looks like a safe, sensible buy until the diesel starts racking up bills. Diesel DPF/EGR/AdBlue faults are the most disqualifying issue on this generation — a blocked DPF or failed AdBlue system can run $400–$2,200 depending on how far the neglect went. Automatic and DSG gearbox judder is the other deal-breaker, with repairs stretching to $5,500 if the mechatronic unit has been run on dirty fluid. Check both before you get emotionally attached.
This guide covers ten documented issues: diesel DPF/EGR/AdBlue fault where fitted, automatic/DSG/clutch judder, AWD/Haldex/transfer case service neglect, coolant leak or water pump fault, infotainment/software electrical faults, suspension knocks and tyre wear, brake corrosion or EPB fault, panoramic roof or boot water leak, turbo boost leak or actuator fault, and recall/campaign status. Each fault has a field check and a real repair-cost range.
A well-documented F25 with full service history is a capable, comfortable used SUV. A neglected one — especially diesel, especially early cars — will cost you far more than you saved on the purchase price. This guide tells you which one is in front of you.
