X1buyer's guide

10 known faults — inspection procedures and real repair costs.

The E84 X1 is compact, practical and based on solid BMW underpinnings — but diesel examples bought on a short-trip diet come with a ready-made emissions problem. Diesel DPF/EGR/AdBlue fault where fitted is the lead risk, with repair costs running $400–$2,200 depending on how far the soot buildup or EGR contamination has progressed. Automatic/DSG/clutch judder is the second deal-breaker on this platform: a shuddering or flaring gearbox without diagnosis proof carries a $900–$5,500 repair tag.

This guide covers ten known issues: Diesel DPF/EGR/AdBlue fault where fitted, Automatic/DSG/clutch judder, AWD/Haldex/transfer case service neglect, Coolant leak or water pump fault, Infotainment/software electrical faults, Suspension knocks and tyre wear, Brake corrosion or EPB fault, Panoramic roof or boot water leak, Turbo boost leak or actuator fault, and Recall/campaign status. Each fault has a field check and a real repair-cost range.

A clean E84 with matching tyres, a full service file and a clear cold-start scan is a capable and efficient compact SUV. An untidy one with mismatched tyres, no Haldex fluid history and an emissions warning recently cleared is a different proposition entirely. This guide tells you which one you're standing next to.
